How do I check/improve system resources in Windows?

Software KB

kb# SW00013
Low system resources can cause many issues in Windows like system running slow, taking a long time to boot, locking up and alot of errors. Because of that the resources should be checked once in awhile to make sure it stays somewhat high. (AOL users try to stay above 85%)

To check it in Win 95,98,Me

Click the start button and go up to settings then click on control panel.
Double click on the System icon and then click on  Performance now look at the line that says System Resources.
That is the % of resources that you are using right now, WOW that's low.

To check it in Win XP

Hold down ctrl + alt and hit delete

So how do I clear it up?

     In Windows 95:
Right click on the start button and go to open
Then go to the startup folder and delete the icons you don't need there (everything except your Antivirus software, Firewall, or High speed internet connection program)

In Windows 98, Me, and XP:

Click on start and then run type "MSconfig" in the box without the "" and click OK
Go to the tab at the top that says Startup, you will see alot of checkboxes. Now just take out what you don't need. This will not remove programs from your computer it just keeps them from running at startup.
Then click Apply then Ok, then on the popup box click Yes to restart your computer.

What Checks should I leave in?

In Windows 98 leave checks in the boxes that says:
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile (there may be more than one)
SchedulingAgent
And any Antivirus, Firewall, or High speed internet programs.

In Windows Me leave checks in the boxes that says:

ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile (there may be more than one)
SchedulingAgent
Pchealth
*StateMgr
And any Antivirus, Firewall, or High speed internet programs.

     In Windows XP:

You can take the check out of everything and its OK
